UFC Fight Night 241 preview
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

A recurring theme has popped up on the main event of many UFC Fight Night cards recently. There are young up-and-coming fighters with sparkling records who are eager to show they are legitimate superstars paired against durable veteran fighters. Edson Barboza is used to filling the spot of gatekeeper.

Barboza, who is ranked No. 13 in the featherweight, was nearly beaten senseless by Sodiq Yusuff during the first round of their five-round bout. But Barboza recovered quickly after a wild first round. Over the course of the next four rounds, Barboza wore down the younger fighter on the way to a unanimous decision win.

After suffering five losses in seven fights, including two split decisions, Barboza has now picked up consecutive wins and performance bonuses. MMAfighting latest news will show that it should make for an interesting contest with Lerone Murphy.

Murphy is unbeaten during six fights in the UFC and during his 14-fight career. However, Murphy has yet to take on any ranked fighters. He will need to show he can handle the striking of a strong veteran like Barboza if Murphy wants to rise in the ranks. MMA news sites show Murphy has shown he is durable and has good striking.

Still, it is preferable to avoid a side in a match that could go the distance. Barboza is no stranger to split decisions. At the end of a long night of fights, it would be better to avoid having to sweat out how the final scores come out.

Khaos Williams Needs to Live Up to His Potential

Khaos Williams hasn’t necessarily seen his power translate to the next level of mixed martial arts. Williams won his first two UFC fights by knockout but has seen four of his next five fights go to the scorecards. Frustratingly for him, both of those bouts were split decisions, one of which Williams won.

Williams’ next opponent, Carlston Harris, won’t be any easier to put away. Harris has compiled a 4-1 record in the UFC. Harris’ only loss came to Shavkat Rakhmonov, but Rakhmonov has finished everyone in his career and is considered a future title hopeful.

Williams has also faced his share of tough competition, including unorthodox striker Michel Pereira. This is a tough fight to call. Williams hasn’t necessarily seen his power translate against fighters who are more highly regarded in their weight division.

Gorimbo Hopes to Pick Up Steam

Themba Gorimbo had only $7.49 in his bank account before his second fight in the UFC against Takashi Satō in May 2023. Gorimbo was also sick before the fight. But Gorimbo has seen his life change big time since his win over Satō.

Professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson heard about Gorimbo’s story and went to visit him at MMA Masters gym in Miami. The Rock ended up providing Gorimbo with a place to live. Gorimbo responded to his win over Satō with a knockout win over Pete Rodriguez in his next fight.

Now Gorimbo will be faced with trying to handle grappling ace Ramiz Brahimaj. Brahimaj is 2-2 during his four fights in the UFC, with both of his wins coming by submission. Gorimbo has been submitted twice in his career.

This should be a fun fight where the judges don’t need to get involved.

Yanez Hopes to Bounce Back From Difficult Stretch

Adrian Yanez looked like a strong contender after entering the UFC by earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series. Yanez leaned on his excellent striking to win his first five fights in the promotion. However, Yanez has found life difficult since the difficulty level increased.

Yanez took a knockout loss to Rob Font in April 2023. He then took a difficult loss to Jonathan Martinez by leg kick. Yanez will take a major step down in competition when he meets Vinicius Salvador.

Salvador has lost his first two fights on the UFC main card by decision. Taking on an experienced veteran in Yanez will be a tough task to handle. Yanez will also be anxious to get another victory after having a few tough performances in a row.

Does Angela Hill Have Enough Pop?

Betting on an Angela Hill fight is a risky proposition. Hill, even at age 39, is impossible for fighters to put away. Hill prefers to fight by pressuring her opponents.

During Hill’s career, she has competed in 29 professional bouts, 22 of which have gone the distance. She has never been knocked out. Luana Pinheiro will need to be ready to strike if she wants to have an opportunity to beat Hill. While Hill has been submitted twice in her career, she has fought against top-level grapplers like Mackenzie Dern and gone the distance. The best MMA sites show this will be a fight that likely goes the distance as well.

It is better to trust Hill to turn in a typical performance for her than to back Pinheiro coming off a devastating knockout loss to Amanda Ribas. Pinheiro is an all-around strong fighter but will need to hunt for takedowns in this match. Hill never takes her foot off the gas pedal.

Bets to consider: Hill -135, Hill by decision

Here are some quick picks for the rest of the fights on the card:

  • Light heavyweight, Oumar Sy vs. Tuco Tukkos
  • Lightweight, Victor Martinez vs. Tom Nolan
  • Women’s strawweight, Piera Rodriguez vs. Ariane Carnelossi
  • Women’s bantamweight, Melissa Gatto vs. Tamires Vidal
  • Middleweight, Abus Magomedov vs. Warlley Alves
  • Flyweight, Alateng Heili vs. Kleydson Rodrigues
