Baltimore Ravens let another defensive star leave via free agency as their colossal roster collapse continues
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Ravens have officially lost more roster talent than any other NFL franchise this off-season and it's not even close.  Over the course of the past few weeks the Ravens have watched five of their defensive starters leave via free agency. Then they let 2400 offensive line snaps walk out the door, and traded away another 900 in the form of Morgan Moses to the Jets. Today, it only got worse.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Baltimore Ravens' best pass rusher last year Jadeveon Clowney will be signing a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers worth up to $24 million dollars. Less than 48 hours ago Ravens coach John Harbaugh had indicated Clowney still may be returning to the team. Apparently not.

Clowney led all Ravens edge defenders with 9.5 sacks last season and easily posted the highest pass rush pressure rate (near 15%). The Ravens are now left with just one edge defender from the 2023 roster who logged more than one sack. Yes, the team made sure to re-sign star defensive tackle Justin Madubuike to a massive deal, but that apparently didn't leave much money for anyone else.

All together the Ravens have now let over 7,500 snaps from their 2023 roster leave. Without any additional restructures or releases the Ravens have somewhere between $10 and $15 million dollars in estimated 2024 cap space to play with in free agency. How will they choose to use it if not to re-sign high impact pass rushers?

The Ravens still have multiple offensive line positions to replace. They're currently rostering only two true safeties. And now they don't have any depth at edge defender. General manager Eric DeCosta certainly has his work cut out for him if the Ravens want any hope in getting back to the AFC Championship game or beyond in 2024.
