Point Taken – Celtic FC Women now on Verge of Historic Title Glory

Lots of early pressure today from the Celts as the game got underway in Cumbernauld. Barclais putting in great effort up and down the park as per usual, even managing to slip our attackers in on occasion.

Then theRangers started to work their way into the game, earning some chances but Kelsey Daugherty wasn’t tested. The same could be said for us as well though as up the other end, Tash Flint was played in by Natalie Ross and she took a first time shot that sailed wide. It was the first big chance of the game and it would be a constant feature of the afternoon when on another day the Goal Machine could have had a hat-trick.

Celtic came close to getting the opener just after the half-hour mark as Tash Flint was through on goal. She took the shot but it flew narrowly by the post. A few minutes later, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford, putting in a great shift on the wing, cut it into midfield, finding Natalie Ross, who picked out Flint again. It was a good pass in behind but the striker couldn’t get to it in time.

All square at the break with theRangers having most of the ball but failing to achieve a shot on target, although the crossbar came to Celtic’s rescue one in each half.

After the interval Celtic looked to quickly make an impact as Ross was battling for the ball in midfield. She eventually won it, sending it over Amy Gallacher, who attempted a pass to Flint. Flint was on the wrong side of it though as another chance went by us.

With 51 minutes on the clock, Flint received the ball inside of the area. She controlled it well and struck towards the net, forcing the Rangers goalkeeper into a good save. Victoria Esson bailing her side out as the Celtic players really started to show their title intent. Esson would make yet another big save shortly after as Flint’s attempt on the 56th-minute mark should have found the back of the Rangers net.

The clock was ticking down but neither team were ready to settle for a draw. Murphy Agnew was being picked out but couldn’t quite get shots off, and up the other end, theRangers were being forced into throw-in after throw-in as the Celtic back-line looked as solid as rock.

Celtic survived an injury time scare but in the end, both sides had to settle for a point apiece, a result that certainly favours Celtic much more than theRangers.

Of course though, with three games left to play, we are still tied on points at the top of the table. We have a better goal difference which will favour us in the end, but we can’t afford to drop any points from here on out. Doing so would mean we’d have to rely on them also dropping points.

Three wins Celtic – Partick Thistle at Airdrie, Hearts away and then Hibs at Celtic Park and we will almost certainly be Champions. Now is the time for the Celtic support to mobilise and get behind the team, following the example of the travelling Celtic supporters this afternoon who were magnificent, chanting all game long and giving the team great encouragement.

And if you listen to Jo Potter’s interviews post, see if you can hear her say the word ‘Celtic’, having listened to three so far not once. Ha ha ha…she does admit that the goal difference is effectively another point but hopes we slip up in the last week with three games, and a ‘limited squad’.
